Fascinating concept. We had not thought of it, but we may build variable pricing into the ticketing system that we offer. In fact variable pricing within sections may be real useful.

Hey Deb,

Nice to hear a dissenting view! I remember whilst watching it – and I did try and get this across in my thoughts above, but now I read your remarks I don’t think I have – that, well, The Chairs really isn’t for everyone.

If I was pushed I would probably argue that it’s because of the form. I didn’t say this above, but I do tend to have a bias against absurdism, simply because absurdist work isn’t very accessible, and yes, they tend to get boring.

Now, I did have a good time, as I implied above, but then again – I approach theatre with a good deal of theatre baggage that can help me get a lot out of it.

However, and I’m grateful for your remarks Deb, I think perhaps in my fear of letting my doubts over the form colour my criticism, I wasn’t hard enough. For The Chairs is not a classic fun night at the theatre type show and if you go and watch it you might just find it a bit of a yawn.

For those ambitious peoples wanting to see it then, perhaps let both of our remarks inform who you might ask as your date!

Absurdist it may be. The occassional laugh it may have. Boring it certainly is, but mercifully short! An hour fifteen that you'll never get back. By the way, the Roundhouse Theatre hasn't actually used The Roundhouse option for a couple of years.

I saw this show in Sydney a few weeks ago. "We know it's some trick, but we don't care" - umm not me! It bugged me continuously as my friends and I tried to work out how he does it! But yes, delightful, and he handles snarky audience members very well.
